Visitors to the Buckeye Furnace State Memorial on Saturday were treated to a variety of presentations. President Abraham Lincoln (Robert E. Ervin) returned on his travels of Ohio to honor us with a speech on his selection of Grant as Supreme Commander of the Union Forces. He then posed for photos and visited in the company store.
Jackson Historical Society member Michael Stroth spoke on the Battle of Berlin Heights in conjunction with a display of Civil War ordinance and memorabilia found on property owned by Ronald Salmons in the Berlin Heights area. Mr. Salmons had an informative presentation of the Civil War battle artifacts and an impressive union uniform that he wore. He was a great addition to the event and we hope he will return in the future.
The living history Confederate camp was manned by Mark Dubiel and Nathan Willis dressed in Confederate uniforms. They had a campfire going and did a shooting presentation of a replica Civil War weapon.
The living history Union camp was manned by Mike Beam dressed in a Union uniform, he had several items that a Union soldier would have carried into battle including a drummer’s drum. He also had examples of different Union uniforms.
Beautiful dulcimer music was provided by John Grosjean throughout the afternoon.
Eventually the rain began and everyone moved into the company store for more music, ice cream and lemonade. It was a great afternoon.
Looking forward to SEPTEMBER 4 and pulled pork sandwiches, homemade lemonade and ice cream!
